Cat is a Teacher Education doctoral student interested in the stories alternative high school students tell about bodies and texts and how her own story intertwines with theirs. She's taught a variety of undergraduate and masters courses; children's literature, young adult literature, content area literacy, multicultural education, and integrating technology into the curriculum. She's also field instructed, advised freshman seminars abroad and is currently helping the university write rubrics for the university wide liberal learning goals. In addition to this, Cat is a single mom, alternative high school principal and teacher (English, History and unofficially yoga) and all around rockstar. She has a bachelor of science in English and Sociology with minors in Art and Gerontology from Central Michigan University, received her teaching certification from Olivet College and her Masters in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University.
I am a doctoral student in Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy. My research interest is the intersection of global and digital citizenship education. My research has been based in urban areas throughout the United States and Australia. I examine how youth engage with popular culture such as music and games and other digital tools, and make meaning from their experience. I have taught a gambit of courses on the high school (mathematics, technology), undergraduate (mathematics, computer science, telecommunications, educational psychology) and masters (global Indigenous education and human rights, technology integration), and doctoral level (preparing future faculty).
I have been selected to serve as a technology consultant for various universities and NGOs in the U.S and abroad as well as with the U.S. Department of State/UNESCO Tonga. I have an MSc in Education - Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University, BA in Applied Mathematics, and Certificates in Serious Gaming and Teaching Google Apps, as well as over 15 years of professional experience in the area of educational technology, multicultural and urban education, and out-of-school program design, development and assessment. In my free time, I travel, draw and paint.
